Sunline Shooter Fluorocarbon

Diameter chart, reel capacity & backing guide

Sunline Shooter fluorocarbon manufacturer product package

Shooter is Sunline's fluorocarbon range divided into Finesse Special, Marionette Special, and Power Special. The US listing changes both category and package length across the strength range. This page keeps those exact diameters and retail lengths together for full-spool or backing plans.

Is Shooter right for your setup?

Shooter is a fluorocarbon main-line option for anglers matching a dedicated setup to a particular presentation. The heavier Power Special sizes call for suitable rod power, lure weight and spool size. Choose the strength for the fishing first, then check whether a full fill or a shorter working section over backing makes better use of the package.

Choosing your setup

Choosing your Shooter strength

The US chart groups 7-9 lb as Finesse Special, 10-20 lb as Marionette Special, and 22-30 lb as Power Special. Treat these as manufacturer product categories, not automatic recommendations for your rod or fishing conditions.

Do not borrow FC Sniper's heavy-strength diameter. Shooter 25 lb is .0171 inch in this US chart, while FC Sniper 25 lb is .0159 inch. At the same stated strength, Shooter uses more calculated spool space in that comparison.

A small reel can run out of useful working length quickly at the heavy end. If the remaining main line barely covers a long cast, thinner suitable line or a more appropriate reel may be preferable to reducing backing further.

This is a specification-based setup guide, not a hands-on Shooter performance test.

Backing, working line & leaders

110 yards is not 165 yards

The 7-9 lb and 22-30 lb retail entries are 110 yards. The 10-20 lb retail entries are 165 yards. Read the selected package instead of assuming every Shooter box contains the same amount.

Plan the connection depth

With mono backing, leave enough Shooter above the knot for casting, runs, and retying. A short package may suit a working section even when it cannot fill the whole reel.

Keep the market consistent

These are Sunline America's Shooter specifications. Check imported or older packages before substituting their strength labels or spool lengths into this US-based plan.

Shooter questions, answered

Why does Shooter show three category names?

Sunline describes different size-specific versions within the Shooter family. The strength you select identifies the applicable range; the calculator still uses that strength's line diameter.

Is Shooter 22 lb available?

The current US listing includes 22 lb with 110- and 660-yard variants. The chart gives .0159 inch and .405 mm.

Does a bulk spool change the reel capacity?

No. It changes how much line you have available, not the space inside the reel. Capacity depends on the reel reference and the selected line diameter.

Specifications & sources

Specifications checked 2026-09-13. Manufacturer chart inch/mm pairs transcribed separately; assigned product code variants verify strength-specific package lengths. Check the actual package when buying older or imported stock. Product imagery identifies the model, not every selectable strength.

Calculations use the catalog's listed inch diameters. Published inch and millimeter values may differ slightly because of rounding.
