Shimano Grappler 8 Braid
Diameter chart, reel capacity & backing guide

Grappler 8 is Shimano's multicolor eight-carrier braid for casting and jigging. Its New Zealand table reports average strength in pounds, including 24.7, 38.6 and 59.5 lb. Those exact labels and the 300-meter package are preserved here, without turning them into familiar round-number tests.

Is Grappler 8 right for your setup?
Grappler 8 is a multicolor, eight-strand main line for casting and jigging. The changing colors provide a reference for how much line you have let out, which is useful when repeating a drift or fishing a depth range. Allow additional working line for current, line angle and fish runs before deciding how much backing belongs underneath.
How much Grappler 8 will fit?
Calculated estimates, not measured fills. Stop at the reel manufacturer's fill level even if some line remains.

Choosing your Grappler 8 strength
The verified 30 lb row is .190 mm and the 38.6 lb row is .200 mm. The latter is not renamed 40 lb; its label is an average-strength specification.
The 59.5 lb entry is .230 mm and 73.6 lb is .280 mm. Use the published physical diameter for capacity, not a PE-size conversion.
The smallest two source rows have conflicting title/table pound figures, so they are withheld. The verified range starts at the coherent 24.7 lb row rather than concealing that discrepancy.
Specification-based guidance, not a hands-on Grappler 8 test. Capacity results are estimates, not measured fills.

Backing, working line & leaders
Use the 300-meter package
Each verified product code supplies 300 meters, approximately 328.08 yards. Keep the package identity in meters when ordering.
Allow line beyond water depth
Current and drift can put more line out than the vertical depth suggests. Choose a working length that covers your fishing depth, line angle, runs and subsequent reties.
Keep the mainline and leader distinct
Choose terminal leader material and its connection independently. The short leader section is not the mainline used in the capacity calculation.

Grappler 8 questions, answered
Is 38.6 lb just another label for 40 lb?
No. It is the manufacturer's explicit average-strength label. This guide does not rename it or reuse an old 40 lb row.
What does the Heat Sink coating prove?
It is Shimano's stated heat-management treatment. It does not provide a measured temperature or durability guarantee for your fishing conditions.
Are these diameters calculated from PE size?
No. Millimeter diameters are printed in the exact product table. Inches are conversions of those values.
