Maxima Fluorocarbon actual manufacturer product package

Maxima Fluorocarbon is a different line from Maxima Clear mono. This guide covers US 200-yard One Shot spools for filling reels. Short Leader Wheels and heavy leader coils are not included in the reel-fill choices.

Is Fluorocarbon right for your setup?

Maxima Fluorocarbon is a main-line option when you want to cast fluorocarbon directly rather than use it only as a short leader. Start with a diameter that handles well on the reel, especially on a compact spinning spool. A shorter fresh section over sound backing can reduce line used per refill while preserving enough working length for the fishing.

Maxima Fluorocarbon diameter chart

US 200-yard One Shot spools only, not Leader Wheels or coils. Maxima lists the same diameter for 6 and 8 lb, and for 12 and 15 lb. We show those figures as published; they have not been checked against individual package labels. Millimeters are converted from inches.

Choosing your setup

Choosing your Fluorocarbon strength

Maxima lists both 6 and 8 lb One Shot spools at 0.009 inch. The calculator uses that published diameter for both strengths; check your package if it gives a different figure.

The 10 lb size is listed at 0.011 inch, while 12 and 15 lb both show 0.013 inch. Use this fluorocarbon chart, not the Maxima mono chart.

The 20, 25 and 30 lb sizes are 0.016, 0.017 and 0.019 inch. The 40 lb option is thicker still and needs suitably sized tackle. Separate leader coils are not included here.

This is a specification-based Fluorocarbon setup guide, not a ReelCalc hands-on casting, abrasion or breaking-strength test.

Backing, working line & leaders

Use the 200-yard mainline package

Each One Shot spool listed here contains 200 yards. Check your reel's estimated full-spool amount to see whether that is enough.

Short leaders use different packages

Maxima also sells small Leader Wheels and heavy leader coils. This page lists 200-yard One Shot spools for filling reels, so those leader packages are not included.

Choose a full fill or backing plan

A continuous fluorocarbon fill avoids a working-line connection. If you use backing beneath a shorter fresh section, keep its knot below normal casting depth and follow the reel maker's fill guidance.

Fluorocarbon questions, answered

Is this the same product as Maxima Clear?

No. Maxima Clear is monofilament. Maxima Fluorocarbon is a separate line with its own diameters and spool sizes.

Why can adjacent strengths show the same diameter?

Maxima lists matching diameters for 6 and 8 lb, and for 12 and 15 lb. We use those published figures rather than guessing different values.

When should I replace the line?

Check for nicks, rough spots, kinks and other damage, especially after contact with cover. Replace damaged line or trim back to sound line while keeping enough length for your fishing.

How much Fluorocarbon fits my reel?

Use the selected Fluorocarbon diameter with your reel's published capacity. Pound test is a product strength label, not a universal diameter. Stop filling at the reel manufacturer's recommended level.

Does Fluorocarbon require backing?

Backing is optional for a full mainline fill. It can make sense under a shorter fresh working section, but the connection must stay below normal casting depth with enough reserve for runs and retying.
