Cortland Master Braid

Diameter chart, reel capacity & backing guide

Cortland Master Braid actual manufacturer product package

Cortland Master Braid changes construction with strength: four carriers through 40 lb, six at 50-65 lb, eight at 80 lb and twelve at 100-200 lb. Use the selected strength's own diameter and package length to plan the working braid and backing for your reel.

Is Master Braid right for your setup?

Master Braid spans light through heavy main-line setups, with construction changing across its strength range. Choose a diameter and test for the reel and the fishing rather than treating the entire range as one type of setup. For repeated spooling, divide larger packages into working lengths with enough reserve for fish runs and retying.

Choosing your setup

Choosing your Master Braid strength

The 5, 8 and 10 lb rows use four carriers and diameters of 0.004, 0.005 and 0.006 inch. Select these for appropriately light tackle rather than using minimum diameter as the only way to maximize capacity.

The 15-40 lb strengths remain four-carrier, with 20 lb at 0.010 inch and 30 lb at 0.012 inch. Compare the true diameters with other braids, not the chart's mono-equivalent strength column.

Construction changes to six carriers at 50/65 lb, eight at 80 lb and twelve at 100 lb and above. The heavy variants also have different retail lengths; they are not ordinary small-reel recommendations.

This is a specification-based Master Braid setup guide, not a ReelCalc hands-on casting, abrasion or breaking-strength test.

Backing, working line & leaders

Match white packages to the chosen strength

White has verified 150- and 300-yard packages through 80 lb. The 100 and 130 lb retail choice begins at 200 yards, while the current 200 lb variant evidence uses 1200 and 2500 yards. Do not apply all page-wide lengths to every strength.

Use the appropriate braid attachment

Secure the arbor using the reel maker's approved method or a suitable mono base. FiberTech protection and ColorLast do not establish that an unapproved knot on a smooth arbor will grip.

Treat other Master Braid variants separately

Premium Metered, other colors and DQ-labeled packages have their own product variants. This White evidence set does not promise every color is offered at the same strength and length.

Master Braid questions, answered

Is all Master Braid eight-carrier?

No. Cortland's chart specifies four, six, eight or twelve carriers by strength. In the verified range only 80 lb uses eight carriers.

Can I use mono equivalent as the braid diameter?

No. The official chart has separate inch and millimeter diameter columns. Mono equivalent is a comparison label, not a physical diameter measurement.

Are all Master Braid spool lengths available at every strength?

No. This guide matches White product variants to the corresponding strengths and keeps the heavy 200-yard and bulk-only combinations separate.

How much Master Braid fits my reel?

Use the selected Master Braid diameter with your reel's published capacity. Pound test is a product strength label, not a universal diameter. Stop filling at the reel manufacturer's recommended level.

Does Master Braid require backing?

Use the reel manufacturer's approved braid attachment method. On a smooth arbor, a sound mono base can provide grip; additional backing can reduce the braid needed for a planned working length.
