Berkley GINCLEAR Fluorocarbon

Diameter chart, reel capacity & backing guide

Berkley GINCLEAR fluorocarbon manufacturer product package

GINCLEAR is Berkley's fluorocarbon for filling a reel or adding a shock leader to braid. Berkley describes it as easy to handle and supplies it on level-wound spools. The chart below shows US diameters and spool lengths for each strength.

Is GINCLEAR right for your setup?

GINCLEAR is a fluorocarbon main-line option for anglers choosing between a full fresh fill and a shorter working section over backing. On smaller spinning reels, start with a diameter that handles comfortably; heavier fluorocarbon is better evaluated on tackle suited to its size. Leave enough working line for the presentation and for trimming worn sections.

Choosing your setup

Choosing your GINCLEAR strength

The 8 lb entry is .009 inch and 10 lb is .010 inch. Those values should not be replaced with a generic fluorocarbon chart. A small change in physical diameter can change the amount that fits noticeably.

The step from 15 lb to 17 lb goes from .013 to .015 inch in the US listing. That is a larger diameter change than the pound-test labels alone suggest. Recalculate before copying a previous spooling plan.

If GINCLEAR is only the shock leader on a braided setup, use the braid as the main line. The leader strength does not determine the full-spool braid capacity.

This is a specification-based setup guide, not a hands-on GINCLEAR performance test.

Backing, working line & leaders

Check filler versus bulk

The 200-yard filler range includes 4-25 lb. The assigned 2,000-yard bulk range starts at 6 lb. Confirm the package associated with the strength you select.

Level-wound packaging is not automatic line lay

The line still needs to be wound onto your reel under suitable tension. Check for loose wraps, twist, or damage and follow the reel manufacturer's recommended fill level.

Keep usable length above the knot

A backing plan can reduce how much GINCLEAR is used on each fill. Leave enough working line for normal casts, fish runs, and reties, with the connection below that working section.

GINCLEAR questions, answered

Is GINCLEAR a main line or shock leader?

Berkley lists both uses. Select it as the calculator's main line only when it is filling the working portion of the reel; a short leader on braid is a different arrangement.

Where do the millimeter values come from?

The US source used here provides inch diameters. The millimeter column is converted from those inch values and is not presented as a separately published measurement.

Will one 200-yard package be enough?

Compare it with the selected reel's calculated full capacity or your planned working section. If the package is short, change the plan deliberately rather than stopping unexpectedly halfway through a full fill.

Calculations use the catalog's listed inch diameters. Published inch and millimeter values may differ slightly because of rounding.
